Everything you need to know about WiMAX

I posted on spectrum before, but wanted to get a little more clarification. In the US the big wireless providers have purchased spectrum - they have the deep pockets. How can a small provider compete with that? I know there are unlicensed spectrums, but, realistically, how good are those spectrums? Wouldn't they be noisy? Will vendors support those unlicensed bands with the vigor they support the licensed bands?

Michael,

It all comes down to a business case.

Realistically, building a competitive wide area wireless network using unlicensed frequency is a challenging value proposition. The most critical question is whether such a project is fundable. Can you find VC’s who would fund a project that does not have competitive barriers to entry? A license holder brings a clear asset which is a competitive barrier to entry.

Having said that, I will not be surprised to see some niche applications of WiMAX in the unlicensed band, but to build a national or regional commercial WiMAX network which is used to build a defendable business, you need to own frequencies.

Regards,
Haig
